Ready for Solo Dartmoor 5+1 day walk!

The kit is checked out and mustered ready for final packing!

The kit is checked out and mustered ready for final packing!

Tomorrow’s the big day! The kit has been mustered and packed. Everything is finally ready to go!

In terms of kit, the only changes that have been made are that I have replaced all the water bottles with newer versions as the 3 year old bottles were starting to wear out (this includes the Travel Tap). I guess that this shows that I have pretty much reached the sweet-spot with regard to kit.

For this walk I am taking the intermediate sleeping bag – the RAB Neutrino 400 Endurance and I have decided not to take the Down Jacket. I am a little concerned about the latter decision, but given the weather forecast, I’m pretty sure it won’t be required.

Total pack weight for this walk is 15kg wet with food. By the time Thursday is reached I fully expect the pack weight to drop down to around 10-12kg as the food is consumed. So overall not too bad given the duration of the walk.

Speaking of food, I am taking the usual too:

The food all ready for 5+1 days on Dartmoor!

The food all ready and packed for 5+1 days on Dartmoor!

I will be carrying five suppers, five breakfasts, four lunches and assorted on the go snacks.

All packed and ready to go!

All packed and ready to go!

The only thing left to do is send the brief to my safety number, everything else is good to go.

As usual the butterflies are doing their thing in my stomach – just got to try and get a good night’s sleep ready for the start of the next adventure!

I notice that you take a standard hand towel. Have you considered a travel version? Much less bulky and dries faster. Have fun on Dartmoor – it will be pretty soft going underfoot(!).

I have tried some travel ones and it could be that I pick the wrong ones, but they seem to just push water around rather than absorb it. I suspect I will be holding on to that towel though, as it has been out on every multi-day walk that I have done – I guess it’s now traditional 🙂

    Hi Rob,
Hope it is/was fun out there! My partner and I were out on Dartmoor for three days over the Easter long weekend with our dog – we did a big loop out from Belstone, down to Fenworthy Forest, over to Sandy Ford/Lindt Tor and back. Nothing too strenuous as my other half is 16 weeks pregnant. The weather was lovely, I even managed to get sunburnt! The landscape is increadible, there is nothing quite like it back in Australia. I’m looking forward to your write-up.

Thanks Tusc – The weather was superb for the whole walk. Dartmoor is pretty unique – even in the Uk – and is one of my favourite places, despite its bleakness. There is a lot of scenery that Australia has too that I would only dream about having on my doorstep! 🙂
